The Canon PIXMA MX870 is ideal for home use and home use. If you value quality over speed, the MX870 gives no reason to complain. The colors were a bit bleached, but overall it’s as good as you could expect given the paper quality and print speed.īut when we slotted some photo paper into the back drawer and made the quality to high, the printer really came into its own: beautifully rich colors, super smooth slope ramps, and excellent details. The MX870 performed very well in our standard-quality, plain-paper photo test, making a very usable print with very little banding. 
In our speed test, a 20-page document printed in four minutes, 58 seconds, which is a little slow but acceptable for a home-office machine. It is also waterproof – perfect for envelopes and flyers. The five-tank system uses pigmented black ink for printing text, allowing vivid, clear results with very little bleeding. Print quality meets the high standards set by recent Canon releases. The paper tray opens automatically when the machine is about to print, and it’s so easy to set up and use that you hardly need the extensive printed manual. The build quality of the MX870 is exceptionally good, as is the useful little details like the LEDs that light up to show an ink tank is mounted correctly. The stablemate earned a five-star review back in MacFormat issue 215, and the new machine succeeds admirably in living to these high standards.\
